ICAR (Intermediate Care Assessment and Rehabilitation)

Welcome to Houghton’s inpatient unit.

The ICAR service (Intermediate Care Assessment and Rehabilitation) service is within Houghton Primary Care Centre.

The 24-bed in-patient unit is run by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (which runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead) and the GPs from the Intrahealth Health Centre in Washington.

The unit has been set up for patients over the age of 18 who live in Sunderland or who are registered with a Sunderland GP who need a higher level of care than can be carried out in their own home setting - these patients are individuals who would normally have ended up going into hospital in the absence of any other alternatives.

The unit will also help to support timely and effective  discharge from hospital for patients who require ongoing monitoring and rehabilitation to enable them to then return home safely.
