Meet A Newly Qualified A&E Nurse

Posted on Tue, 21/01/2020

Meet Kayleigh Atkinson, a recently qualified A&E nurse. She explains how she settled into her new career with the help of last year’s welcome event and what advice she would give to newly qualified nurses joining us in March.

“As an accident and emergency nurse I am on hand to work within the Emergency Care Centre in Gateshead, delivering high standards of acute nursing care, within a very busy department.

What I love most about my job is working as a nurse in emergency care within a dedicated team who help others in need. I have a real passion for emergency nursing and I have worked my way up from nursing assistant in the same A&E, having worked here for the last 10 years. Every day is different, and I get to look after new people and experience new challenges every single day. Nursing is such a rewarding job, and every day I go home feeling I have helped somebody in some way.

Starting as a newly qualified nurse is not an easy transition and it can be really difficult because it is such a huge change of role and responsibility from being a nursing assistant or student nurse. But with the great support of the hospital, my amazing colleagues and a dedicated preceptor, I have settled in extremely well. I have gained so much more confidence since those early days as a new Staff Nurse.

As a newly qualified nurse, last year I attended the Nurse Welcome Event which I found really helpful as it was great to meet all the new starters who were in the same position as me. It made me feel much better knowing that others were in the same boat and it was nice to have a chat with likeminded nurses. I also felt genuinely welcomed by all the staff and teams who were there to speak to us and answer any questions. The tasty treats and coffees provided also went down well!

My advice for any new starter to the nursing team is to take each shift day by day, knowing that every day you will build confidence and new skills. You have to be patient with yourself and realise it’s still a learning curve, even when the blue uniform it is on.

We are holding this year’s Nurse Welcome Event on Thursday 23rd January; we hope to see our new nurses at the Surgery Centre at 6pm!
