Gateshead NHS Trust appoints chief operating officer

Joanne Baxter, new COO

QE Gateshead is pleased to announce the appointment of a new chief operating officer (COO) with the goal of supporting continuous improvement in the quality of care for patients in Gateshead.

Joanne Baxter, who is an experienced executive director with more than 30 years’ experience in the NHS, is now in place as the COO for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. Joanne joins the Trust from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) where she spent seven years as the Executive Director of Quality, Safety, Innovation and Improvement.

As COO, her remit will be to oversee the surgical, medicine, clinical support and screening, and community services business units, alongside planning and performance, to ensure that all services are high-performing, high-quality and good value.

Joanne says: "I’m thrilled to be joining Gateshead, the place where I started my NHS career more than 30 years ago. This is a brand new, exciting role and I can’t wait to use my passion for improvement and innovation to make Gateshead the best it can be, both the best place to work and the very best place for care."

Joanne has a great track record in the NHS and she will bring fantastic leadership and operational experience to the Gateshead NHS team."

Joanne is a registered nurse who has extensive experience as a senior manager in acute hospitals, community services and primary care. She is skilled in project management, quality improvement and people development.
