Breast care nurses

The Breast Care Nurses (BCNs) provide expert advice and guidance on breast cancer, screening, treatment options as well as practical information and support.

The BCN team are based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead but also provide services in Sunderland and South Tyneside.

The BCNs are committed to giving you the best possible holistic care and ensure they meet local and national guidelines. The team works constantly to improve the service in response to patients' comments and take part in local and national patient audits.

We provide a wide range of services including:

  • Nurse-led diagnostic/follow up clinics

  • Oncology advice/support

  • Lymphoedema

  • Seroma drainage/wound care

  • Reconstruction advice

  • Nipple tattooing

  • Acupuncture service

  • Prosthesis service

  • Health promotion

  • Secondary breast cancer advice/support group (Monthly support groups are held at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, contact Pauline Connelly, Breast Care Nurse Specialist on 0191 445 3735 for more information).

The BCN’s attend the weekly MDT meeting and contribute to discussions regarding patients and act as the patient’s advocate in the meeting. The BCN’s contribute to planning and delivering education locally and nationally, promotes evidence based holistic care and regularly monitors services they provide by compiling regular local patient questionnaires and taking part in the National cancer patient survey. The BCN’s work closely with other support services, local charities, psychology service, GP's, chemotherapy unit, oncology service, Macmillan and refer as appropriate.
