Colorectal pelvic floor

The Colorectal Pelvic Floor service is provided as part of the Colorectal Surgical Unit and includes a dedicated Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Colorectal Pelvic Floor Nurse Specialist.

Patients are referred for a variety of symptoms and conditions affecting the bowel. This can include symptoms of faecal incontinence and constipation and conditions such as rectal prolapse.

Once referred to the service the patient will be seen by the team at clinic. During the consultation patients may require a small examination of the back passage (anus and rectum) and for some females may also require a vaginal examination.

After an initial assessment patients will possibly require further investigations and treatments including surgery. Some treatments may be delivered by the Colorectal Pelvic Floor Nurse Specialist at the Functional Bowel Clinic in Bensham Hospital.

As part of clinical governance the team liaise with colleagues in the region monthly as part of a multi-disciplinary approach, ensuring best practice and optimisation of patient care.

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon: Mr Mark Mercer-Jones
