Colorectal surgeons

The colorectal surgeons at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital specialize in keyhole surgery for a wide variety of colorectal conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor prolapse.

They are amongst the most experienced surgeons in the region. We believe that when choosing which hospital to have your surgery in, you should know which surgeons are available for your operation.

Mark Katory

Mark Katory has been a consultant colorectal surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since April 2007. He specialises in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery and was specifically appointed to set up and develop the laparoscopic colorectal service. He covers general colorectal emergency work when on-call and also works closely with the regional gynae-oncology unit which is based at the QE.

Mark did his higher surgical training in North Trent but relocated to the North-east where he was born and schooled to re-unite with extended family members. His main interests lie in the treatment of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor disorders.

He undertook his colorectal fellowship at the main colorectal tertiary referral centre in Singapore in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and is a now a National Preceptor in laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. He has an MD in colorectal cancer genetics from the University of Sheffield and has published and presented work both nationally and internationally.

Paul has been a consultant colorectal and general surgeon at QE since February 2014. He attended Newcastle medical school and completed his surgical training throughout the North East of England with a particular focus on laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

After finishing standard colorectal training he undertook a specialised fellowship in Oxford where he gained further experience particularly within:

  • Complex inflammatory bowel disease surgery.
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstructive surgery.
  • Advanced laparoscopic surgery including local resection techniques for rectal cancer and natural orifice surgery for low rectal cancer.

At the QE hospital he has helped augment the existing colorectal service with innovations from this fellowship training. He offers colorectal surgical services, endoscopy, treatment for common general surgical conditions and takes part in the general surgery oncall.

He is the surgical lead for the new Emergency Care Centre at QE Hospital and takes an active interest in research and audit within the department.
