Critical Care Rehabilitation
The work of our Critical Care Rehabilitation Team is highlighted as an area of 'outstanding practice' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
We provide all the recommendations of NICE guidelines Rehabilitation after critical illness 2009.
We lead the way nationally with a model for others to follow.
We are finalists in the Nursing Times Awards 2016.
We were nominated by a former patient in the Gateshead Star Awards 2016.
The service demonstrated a 52% reduction in length of ward stay following the implementation of the critical care rehabilitation service/ pathway. The service, which incorporates the pathway, patient diaries and a multidisciplinary approach to support after critical care rehabilitation, has made a significant difference to patients’ quality of life by providing a quicker recovery after critical illness, and hence a more cost efficient service.
The model has been adapted for use in orthopaedics with two further rehabilitation assistants working with orthopaedic patients to help speed recovery and promote independence.
