PATIENTS in Gateshead are getting five star treatment in a new discharge hospitality lounge (DHL) at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The DHL is designed to give patients who are being discharged from hospital, a comfortable and positive experience before going home.

Patients can watch television, read and play games. It also enables them to interact with staff and other patients, which is important to combat feelings of stress, and loneliness in the typically older patient that the lounge looks after. The lounge also has its own kitchen facility and patients have access to an unlimited amount of refreshments, good hydration and nutrition are especially important for patients to get their strength back.

The new lounge has gone down a storm with patients with comments from patients including:

• “Staff are very friendly, and the tea and sandwiches were very welcome!”
• “Excellent care, everything was just right.”
• “Excellent care and facilities, and staff were very helpful and courteous. I couldn’t fault it.”

Hilary Lloyd, Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery said: “The discharge hospitality lounge was introduced to improve patients experience of discharge, and it has proved a great success. I am pleased to say that we have had very positive comments from patients and relatives.”
