Work starts on new £32m Emergency Care Centre

Posted on Wed, 28/11/2012

WORK is about to start on the QE site to build a new £32million state-of-the-art emergency care centre, which will transform the way local people will be cared for when they need their local hospital most.

The design and style of the services and facilities in the new centre will be state-of-the-art, drawing on best practice from the UK and abroad. The centre is expected to be seen nationally as the way forward for integrated emergency care units. It is being designed by Miller hps and built by Miller Construction, based in the north east of England, and is expected to open in autumn 2014.

The centre will provide a single integrated service for the people of Gateshead and the surrounding area when they have a medical emergency, including a specific unit for the treatment of children. It will also include accident and emergency facilities including a walk in type facility, a 35 bed short stay unit (all single rooms with en suite facilities) and specialist diagnostic equipment to help doctors and nurses diagnose and treat patients’ problems more quickly.

The work will involve closing the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s current main entrance for two years whilst the centre is built. As a consequence there will be some disruption around the hospital site. The Trust is working hard to minimise  this during the build phase by maintaining access and providing an off-site car park for staff.

Patients will be informed through appointment letters of some changes to clinic venues across the QE site.

Ian Renwick, Chief Executive at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said: “I would like to apologise in advance to our patients and their families and visitors for disruptions to their visits here whilst we build this new centre. However, it will be a flagship service offering the very highest quality of care in a world class environment; of which the people of Gateshead can be extremely proud.”
