Ellison Unit

The Ellison Unit is based at Bensham Hospital.

It is a nurse-led day hospital and community service providing assessment, treatment, rehab and monitoring of people over the age of 65 with mental health problems.

The Day Treatment/Outreach Team provides a specialized service in assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and monitoring for patients over the age of 65 years suffering from functional mental health problems. The service is led by a team of Registered Mental Health Nurses (RMN's) covering the whole of the Gateshead catchment areas. All patients and carers accessing the service are provided with relevant information in relation to diagnosis, treatment and therapies as well as support and advice on practical issues.

Community Outreach Group is a nurse-led service assessing the specific needs of individuals aged 65 years plus, who have a diagnosis of a functional mental illness and who have been referred by their consultant psychiatrist. The aim is to offer low key support to individuals who require therapies or monitoring. The nurse team use a psychotherapeutic approach to provide treatment and support for anxiety, depression and other functional illnesses and positively monitor each individual and reporting to the appropriate consultants at team reviews.

The Gateshead Memory Hub is a resource for all patients over 65 who have been diagnosed as having dementia. We offer treatment, education, cognitive stimulation therapy and post diagnostic support for the individual as well as carer support, information/guidance on relevant services, and benefits. We work closely with other agencies both statutory and voluntary.  We also provide staff training in dementia care and work hard to raise awareness of dementia both within the acute hospital and the public domain.

The Community Challenging Behaviour Service is a multi-disciplinary team that consist of a consultant psychiatrist, counselling psychologist and a specialist nurse. The team works within care homes in Gateshead.
