QE receives national accreditation for staff health and well-being

Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust has successfully achieved the Health & Wellbeing Good Practice Award from Investors in People for the second time

After undergoing a rigorous assessment involving interviews with over 100 staff, the Trust celebrated maintaining the Award at the end of November 2013.   This followed the Trust being the first hospital trust in the region to have achieved the Award at their first assessment three years ago.

The Award helps organisations to focus on workplace wellbeing and covers areas such as effective planning, supportive management, supportive culture and work-life balance – all leading to more awareness of health and wellbeing and a healthier workplace.

David Lane, Health & Wellbeing (HWB) assessor from Investors in People North of England said: “The Trust is an exemplar organisation with a joined-up approach to health and wellbeing, which has embedded into the culture of the organisation. Health and wel-being interventions are innovative and there is a strong infrastructure of support including steering group, champions, occupational health service, ward accreditation and resilience training for staff.”

The Trust recognises that a more satisfied and healthy workforce will be better able to engage in change and service improvement, whilst providing a safer, high quality service to patients and service users.

Mary Darroch, OD and Staff Development Manager said: “This is the second round of assessment for us as a trust, and we can see from the assessor’s report how far we’ve come in the three years since we were last reviewed.

“Our HWB Strategy will make sure that we continue our improvement work, particularly in the areas of stress and musculo-skeletal disorders. We know that we have  more work still to do to make sure that all managers are making full use of the interventions and support that the Trust offers to keep their staff as well as possible during challenging times. Where this is being fully utilised, managers are seeing significant reductions in sickness absence rates.”

Gateshead Health is also an Investors in People Champion and is happy to share their experiences to help other organisations explore the benefits of investing in people and their health and wellbeing.
