Labour and birth

Our Delivery Suite provides women with all the support they need in a friendly, relaxed, home from home environment.

Helping a woman have a normal birth can be influenced by the support she receives during her labour and delivery. Coming to QE, you have the reassurance of one to one midwifery care throughout your labour. Our unit is designed to help you and your birth partner to feel as relaxed as possible enabling us all to provide the support you need in helping you to achieve a normal birth.

We provide the perfect combination of low and high risk facilities.  The unit has a high rate of normal births, but obstetricians and anesthetists can attend the birth if needed – right at your bedside, without the need to move you elsewhere while you are in labour.

The unit consists of:

  • Waiting room / time out room for women and their birthing partners.
  • Two induction rooms including refreshment facilities and en suite.
  • Six delivery rooms, storage units conceal equipment including a baby resuscitaire for those ‘just in case’ moments. Each room also has en suite facilities.
  • Pool room for use as water for pain relief or for use in water birth.
  • One high risk room for women who need intensive monitoring or extra space for multiple births. This room can also be used as a second obstetric theatre if needed.
  • Obstetric theatre - staffed 24/7 by anaesthetic and paediatric staff.
  • Two bed recovery room next to the theatre
  • Access to high dependency and intensive care within the main hospital.
