Changes To Maternity - 23rd December 2020

Posted on Wed, 23/12/2020

Supporting women and families in pregnancy and the immediate postnatal period during the current Covid crisis has been and remains the main priority of maternity care in Gateshead

Based on national guidance and review of our mothers and family’s needs during these difficult times we are changing the guidance over the Christmas period, starting from 23rd December.

  • From 23rd December, visiting postnatal/antenatal wards will be changing to 1pm-5pm.
  • Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day visiting will be reviewed on an individual basis, please call the Maternity department on 0191 445 2763 or check with the midwives on the unit.
  • Pregnant women will still be allowed 1 birthing partner to attend.
  • We ask that all women and support/ birth partners wear a surgical mask whilst attending appointments (if you are unable to supply one, one can be provided for you on arrival).
  • Please ensure that if you or your support/ birth partner are displaying any symptoms of coronavirus, you do not attend any scheduled maternity appointments. Please contact your community midwife or the department you were due to attend for further guidance and to reschedule any planned appointments.

Please note: this guidance will be reviewed if there is changing guidance or an increase in Covid infection rates.

Women who have concerns for their health, the wellbeing of their unborn baby or their newborn baby are advised to seek immediate advice via PAU on 0191 445 2764.

Please note these are special arrangements being made for Maternity patients only and don’t apply to other patients who will be attending shared clinic areas (such as Women’s Health Clinic and GP practices) or the rest of the hospital which remains strictly locked down, due to the high local rates of infection.  We would therefore ask that women are sensitive to this when attending appointments.
