Lateral flow testing for pregnant women and support partners

Posted on Wed, 02/06/2021

We know that when you are having a baby, the support from your partner, relative, friend or other person throughout pregnancy and childbirth is really important  to your emotional wellbeing. We want you, as a new mother, here at Gateshead to have access to support from a person of your choosing at all stages of your maternity journey.

As coronavirus restrictions begin to ease, we are delighted to be able to continue to welcome a single support person to come with you to all of your maternity appointments and scans at the QE maternity unit.

We are now able to offer the attendance of an additional second support person to accompany you when you are in labour. However, in order to support this relaxation of maternity service restrictions, the Government has recommended that all pregnant women and their chosen support person(s) now access free lateral flow testing and perform these tests throughout the woman’s pregnancy.

Recommended national guidance is that all pregnant women and their support person(s) use lateral flow devices to test themselves for coronavirus twice a week at home throughout your pregnancy.

In addition, one test should be carried out 24 hours before you attend for any appointment or antenatal scan at the hospital for you (and support person(s)).

You will need to upload your results onto the government reporting app, which you will be directed to once you have ordered your test kit. You will then be sent a text message once you have uploaded your result.

Please show this text to the health professional when you attend for your appointment.

Request your lateral flow testing kits

These kits can be ordered direct to your home, collected from a pharmacy or local testing centre. If you agree to undertake testing and receive testing kits, you should make sure you provide your test results when you attend your  appointments by inputting the results into the required government reporting app.

This screening process will start from Monday 7th June from 9am.

For further information please see the attached leaflet and speak to your midwife for further advice or information.
