Updated advice on maternity scans

Posted on Fri, 24/07/2020

Expectant mothers can now invite one additional adult to accompany them to certain pregnancy scans.

A partner is allowed to accompany a mother to the dating (usually around 12 weeks) and anomaly scans (usually around 20 weeks) and to any early pregnancy scans (in the Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic).

The safety of everyone in our care is always our number one priority. We realise this is a very difficult time for expectant mothers and their families so we thank you for your understanding and consideration during this difficult time.

To enable us to comply safely with social distancing precautions, we request that:

  • Partners wait outside the building and be ready to attend with the patient when they are called for the scan. If they are not immediately available when requested, the scan will proceed without them to prevent any delays and partners will not be allowed to enter the room once the scan has started.

  • Partners will be expected to leave the building immediately after the scan has been completed. If the patient is required to have any further reviews or wait for notes etc, they will need to wait alone in the waiting area unless you have received some bad news, in which case, a separate room will be made available for you both to wait in.

It is important to keep the number of people in our waiting area to a minimum to ensure our patients are exposed to as few people as possible within an enclosed space.

Patients and partners will be expected to comply with hand washing and wearing of masks at all times. Scan rooms will be marked out to show the 2m safe distance and partners must remain in the marked area throughout the scan

Anyone who is showing any symptoms of Covid-19 or has been advised to self-isolate by NHS Track and Trace must not attend appointments.
