Temporary changes to maternity care

New parents with midwife

In 2020 we are planning some significant upgrades to our maternity unit at QE Gateshead.  The first phase of upgrades, which includes improving our water birth facilities and delivery rooms, and building a new obstetric theatre, will begin this week.

In order to start the building work, we have had to plan a short period of time where will be no medical gas supply available on the delivery suite. We will reduce the capacity for delivery of babies from Thursday 5th March and there will be no activity in the unit from 8:00am on Saturday 7 March till 17:00 on Sunday 8 March.

We have reviewed how many mothers this closure could affect and anticipate this will be 6-10 women. Our community midwives and senior midwifery team are contacting all mothers who are due over that period to maintain clear communication around their birth plans and who to contact if they have any concerns over that weekend.

Mothers who go into spontaneous labour between Friday 12.00pm and Sunday 17.00 will be triaged by experienced midwives and may be redirected to our surrounding maternity units at Newcastle, South Tyneside, Sunderland or Durham. We have the full support of these maternity units and, if we have to transfer mothers, we will do so in a safe, supportive caring way to minimise any anxiety caused.

  • If you have an induction or an elective caesarean section planned for that week, these will take place as planned.Planned inductions of labour will be timed around this closure to ensure that no mother will need to be transferred mid-procedure or in labour.

  • Our antenatal and postnatal wards, Pregnancy Assessment Unit and Special Care Baby Unit are not affected and will operate as normal.

If you have any questions or queries about your maternity care, please contact the unit on 0191 445 2763.
