The Mortuary acts as the public mortuary providing a service to both the Hospital and Her Majesty's Coroner for Gateshead, and is responsible for taking care of the deceased.

We look after those who have passed away with dignity and respect until funeral arrangements can be made by the next of kin with an undertaker.

The Mortuary is where Post Mortem investigations are carried out to determine what may have caused a person’s death. Post Mortems are usually performed after a person has died of an illness which could not, for whatever reason, be properly or fully diagnosed before death. This can be either as a result of an order from the local coroner (consent from next of kin is not required for a coroner’s post mortem), or following consent from relatives with a qualifying relationship.

Samples may be taken at the post mortem investigation for further analysis and sent to any department within Pathology to assist in the investigation.

The hospital Chapel of Rest is also sited in the mortuary complex, where viewings of the recently deceased by bereaved relatives can be arranged. This service is strictly by appointment only.
