Gateshead nurse provides a great escape for her colleagues

Fior Sayer founded the QE Wellbeing and Outdoor Activity Group back in March 2021. The group offers NHS Gateshead staff an opportunity to get active and escape the pressures of their professional lives.

Open to all that work for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust and QE Facilities, the group offer a fun, informal and healthy way for staff to unwind. Colleagues join in a range of activities and sports throuhgout the year to enjoy a release.

A dedicated Facebook page is home to the group’s latest event listings, imagery and discussion. Currently home to over 300 members, almost 100 of those took part in an activity during 2021.

The group accomodates for all levels of competence. Highlighting its welcoming nature are beginner events such as local walks and dedicated confidence-builder sessions. These provide contrast to and preparation for the group’s full-day canoeing, paddle boarding and hiking sessions.

Fior explains: “The mission behind the group is to provide staff with a safe space to clear their heads and give colleagues somewhere to relax. I want to help rebuild morale amongst the team as we continue to work through a challenging period.

“I have a passion for the outdoors and fitness. Being able to share that with my colleagues provides me with a boost, and I hope that doing so helps boost others too.”

To that end fellow Staff Nurse, Katy Maughan, recently shared how being part of the group has helped to boost her mental and physical health. Within her blog post, Katy shares that Fior has inspired her to take on challenges she never thought she could overcome.

Further feedback from colleagues has also seen Fior been recognised by the Trust. Named its Star of the Month in July 2021, Fior has also been appointed as a Health and Wellbeing Ambassador within her area.

Fior has further previous for helping colleagues too, completing a 28-mile sponsored run back in April. All funds raised went towards the group’s outdoor activity sessions, helping to establish it within the Trust during its inception.

Focus now shifts to 2022 for Fior and the group, and she continues: “We want to reach even more staff next year. WE’ve already got the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, a coast-to-coast cycling trip and a Lyke Wake walk in the diary.

“I really encourage any staff that are interested in becoming part of the group to join our Facebook page and register your interest. We’re always posting about upcoming trips and plans so just keep an eye out for new opportunities.”
