The newly refurbished children’s unit has reopened at the QE Hospital, Gateshead. The unit went through a full makeover including animated art across the corridor walls.

The refurbishment was supported by children from Gateshead schools through taking part in an artwork competition last year. The competition, called Smile, was created to encourage children to submit their drawings and the winners now have their artwork displayed in the waiting area as well as the chance to come and visit.

The renovation was completed with funds from the hospital’s charity, QE Charitable Funds which helped pay for the artwork, waiting room furniture and a TV for the waiting area.

Clinical lead for Paediatrics Susanne Wolny said, “As a rapidly expanding department treating more and more children with complex needs and disabilities, we are delighted to offer them more disability friendly access and essential adjustments to consultation rooms including our extremely well-received new sensory room.

“The department feels fresh, inviting and calm. The new well-equipped student teaching area has contributed to some excellent feedback from our medical students.”

Admin Manager Leona Parkinson said, “The rainbow flooring has been the biggest success of the renovation and the children really love it.

“It is wonderful to see the animated drawings along our corridors which have been designed with small quotes that are placed at toddler height so children can follow them from the entrance all the way to the waiting area.”

The official re-opening of the newly refurbished children’s ward took place on Friday 27th May 2022.
