  • The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead is set to invest more than £750,000 in a mental health unit for older patients with dementia.

The new investment in the Cragside Court unit at the hospital will provide a wide range of improvements for patients and enable staff to offer much better care in a modern, safe and therapeutic environment.

The new dementia friendly plans will increase privacy and dignity by incorporating more private spaces for patients as well as introducing a separate examination and treatment room.

  • Patients in Gateshead have praised their experiences in hospital in a new survey by the independent healthcare regulator.

The latest research from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that patients who had spent time at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital rated their care favourably especially around emergency care, their time spent on wards and waiting times for planned admissions. The new figures showed that Gateshead scored higher than average in three key areas:

  • Gateshead Health has launched a new strategy to ensure patients remain at the very heart of the organisation and continue to have a say on the way their care is provided.

  • Staff on Cragside Court, an inpatient unit for older people with dementia, helped mark a special day in history over the weekend by throwing a special Royal Wedding tea party for patients.

Patients and their families enjoyed a selection of afternoon-tea style refreshments, activities and a screening of the Royal Wedding to feel part of the special occasion.
