  • Dr David Beaumont, Medical Director at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (which runs the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead), said:

  • QE Gateshead has reached a nationally set target to reduce carbon emissions by 10%, three years early.

    It has also become one of the only trusts in the country to sell its unused carbon on the carbon trading markets as part of the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme.

    Every NHS trust in the country has been set a target to reduce their carbon emissions by 10% by 2015 and Gateshead have achieved this early despite several major builds including the Peter Smith Surgery Centre , Jubilee Wing and Beacon Centre, all of which increase day to day energy usage. 

  • WORK is about to start on the QE site to build a new £32million state-of-the-art emergency care centre, which will transform the way local people will be cared for when they need their local hospital most.

  • COMMUNITY Midwife Mandy Brown has been nominated for an NHS hero award by a grateful patient.

    Mandy’s patient said: “Even though it’s been a while since I had my last baby, I’ve never forgotten how lovely, encouraging and helpful Mandy was; she also went the extra mile to help my sister when she was pregnant even though she was not her patient. Mandy made me feel like I was doing a fantastic job as a mum!”

  • A CHARTERED accountant has been encouraged to lend her skills to the local health service following her own experiences with her son.

    Kathryn Larkin-Bramley’s son was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of six and the experience of caring for him back to full health encouraged her to get involved.

    Now Mrs Larkin-Bramley has been appointed as a new non executive director for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. She takes up the role as chair of the important Audit Committee, which scrutinises the organisation’s financial health.

  • THE stroke research team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead is celebrating after winning a prestigious award.

    The team was nominated for the stroke research network (SRN) Team of the Year 2012 award and was awarded a highly commended place for its work on involving patients in stroke research programmes.

  • Bishop opens new purpose designed palliative care unit in Gateshead

    A NEW purpose designed unit offering palliative care for patients in Gateshead was officially opened yesterday.

    St Bede’s Palliative Care Unit, now based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, was opened by The Right Reverend Mark Watts Bryant, Bishop of Jarrow yesterday afternoon.

  • PATIENTS at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead have rated their experience of cancer services amongst the best in the country in a recent survey.

    The 2011/12 National Cancer Patient Experience Survey questioned patients from all 160 acute hospital NHS Trusts across the country that provide cancer services, and Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust came fifth overall.
