New head doctor appointed for Trust

A specialist in gynaecological cancers has been appointed as the new medical director at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Consultant Keith Godfrey has worked at the QE for 12 years and has been deputy medical director for the past three.

The medical director is the most senior doctor in the hospital and is expected to ensure that the medical care patients receive is at the very centre of everything the hospital does as well as provide leadership for the hospital’s 125 consultants.

Mr Godfrey, 63 trained in Manchester and has worked at hospitals in Newcastle and Sunderland as well as Gateshead.

He said: “I am delighted to have been appointed Medical Director of the QE – it is an honour and a privilege to serve in this role. I think ensuring that clinical teams are involved in decisions about how hospitals are developed and run is crucial in ensuring that patients safety and needs are put at the centre of everything we do.

“The QE has ambitious plans over the next few years – with the development of our new pathology centre and emergency care centre, transforming the way in which we deliver our care and moving services closer to patients’ homes in the community – not to mention a need to deliver hugely significant cost savings. We can only do this if our consultants are dedicated in the care they provide to their patients, passionate about the hospital they work for and are constantly striving to be the very best they and their more junior doctors can be and the medical director is a key part of this process.”
