QE nurses up for national awards

Posted on Tue, 17/09/2013

TWO nursing teams at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust have been shortlisted for national awards by the Nursing Times.

The publication chose the teams below to be shortlisted for the following awards:

  • The Woodside Centre at Dunston Hill Hospital – Nursing in Mental Health category
  • Ward 12/Procedure Investigation Unit (PIU) – Team of the Year

The Woodside Centre is home to Gateshead Younger Persons Dementia Service. They are a dedicated nursing team providing a specialist community outreach and day care service for people under the age of 65, and their families, who have a diagnosis of a dementia illness. There is no other service like it, in this region.

Emma Prendergast, Team Manager of The Woodside Centre said: “It means such a lot to the whole team that
we’ve been shortlisted for the award. We’re hugely proud of the very unique service that we provide at
Woodside, and it’s always nice to be recognised, particularly by a panel of peers from the Nursing Times.”

Ward 12 is the haematology (blood disorders) and rheumatology (arthritis, immune diseases, connective/tissue disorders) inpatient ward who work closely with the nurse led PIU (procedure investigations unit) where people come for investigations to diagnose these sort of illnesses that aren’t externally obvious.

Chris Crone, Modern Matron for Older People who works with Ward 12/PIU said: “The whole team work together to improve patient care, being open to new ideas leads to a continual drive to look for improvements in patient care. Over the past two years the feedback from patients reflects that a compassionate approach is evident from all levels of staff regardless of grade or position. We are very proud and having a finalists party on the ward on the 30th Sept – to celebrate the success for the whole team/trust.”

The awards ceremony where the team find out if they’ve been successful is in London on the 31st October.
