A local conference exploring the approach taken by the Virginia Mason Medical Centre in the USA has attatced so much attention that it has now sold out.

Virginia Mason Medical Centre, a healthcare provider based in Seattle USA, has earned an international reputation for improving the quality and safety of patient care using management techniques normally found in industries like car manufacturing.

Having worked with Virginia Mason colleagues since 2006, the North East Transformation Team (NETS) based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, helps organisations to deploy continuous improvement approaches inspired by industry.

This week, the NETS Team are holding an ‘Innovation from Industry’ event to encourage NHS leaders from all over the country to adapt ideas from industry to improve healthcare safety.  The two day event will be held at the Skills Academy for Sustainable Manufacturing (which houses Nissan’s Global Training Centre).

Over the two days, healthcare leaders will learn about the management innovations that have helped Japan’s automotive companies to international success.  Speaking at the event will be Dr Gary Kaplan, Virginia Mason CEO, who is flying over from Seattle to join delegates in touring Nissan’s production facilities and lead debrief sessions on how ideas from industry can be adapted to improve healthcare.

Tickets for the event, which has attracted national attention, have been snapped up by health professionals across the ragion.  Joining local delegates will be patient safety leads from NHS England and The Health Foundation who have booked places to take part.  The event is now fully booked.

The North East Transformation System (NETS) is a Lean based methodology developed by an improvement collaborative in North East England.  The NETS methodology is used by foundation trusts, commissioners and improvement networks to achieve continuous quality improvement in healthcare.  To support the development and deployment of the NETS approach, a team has been established  hosted by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust
