Maternity unit welcomes special guests

Maternity staff at QE Gateshead have been showcasing their highly rated NHS unit to a group of special guests.

A senior leader from the Royal College of Midwives and a local MP got to meet NHS staff, new mums and some newborn babies as part of a special tour of the Gateshead unit.

New and expectant mothers across the region regularly praise their birthing experience and it has been rated among the very best in the country by the official healthcare regulator the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

During the visit Gill Walton, Chief Executive and General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “I was delighted to be invited to visit the trust and to see the great work the midwives, maternity support workers and whole maternity team are doing, and also to meet the women, and their babies and families.

“It was heartening to see the high quality of care being delivered and the dedication and commitment of the staff, who really care about the work they are doing.”

Liz Twist MP for Blaydon added: “I’ve been delighted today to have seen the tremendous work done by staff at the QE Maternity Unit. It’s made me very proud.

"It is important that we now maintain this level of outstanding service. At a time when so many Maternity Units across the country are struggling, it’s essential that we don’t let that happen at the QE. All Maternity Units deserve the high level of service that we have here.”

Lesley Heelbeck, Head of Midwifery at QE Gateshead said: “We’re always happy for the opportunity to show people around so it was great to welcome our visitors today.

“We’ve had some fantastic feedback from the regulator but also from mums and local families who’ve used the QE. Because we’re a smaller unit we aim to provide much more personal and individual care to everyone who comes here to give birth.

“We want as many local people as possible to come here and start their family with us because we’re proud of providing an outstanding service for the start of new lives in Gateshead

In the last inspection in 2016 the CQC gave maternity services at Gateshead an ‘outstanding’ rating - the highest possible mark - based on a detailed hospital inspection and feedback from local people. It confirmed that the QE provided safe and effective care in accordance with national guidance and that staff continually monitored outcomes for women and took action where improvements were necessary.
