New nurses welcomed to Gateshead

Two nurses

The latest group of newly qualified nurses got a warm welcome to Gateshead after being paired up with their own personal guardian to help them settle into hospital life.

To help celebrate their graduation to fully qualified nurses they enjoyed a specially designed cake, were presented with a nursing survival pack and got to meet their dedicated guardian who will help support them over the next 12 months.

The idea is that these guardians, who all have many years of experience in the NHS, will be able to provide support, advice and knowledge to the new nurses joining the organisation for the first time.

Every year around 50 newly qualified nurses join Gateshead Health and will now get a guardian as well as access to the well-established preceptorship scheme. The new nurses get one-to-one support from an experienced practitioner (a preceptor) to develop confidence, refine skills and provide expert advice.

Hilary Lloyd, director of nursing and midwifery said: “This is a great time to be joining Gateshead as a nurse and we hope this new guardian scheme will be another positive way to integrate some of our new recruits at the start of their career.

“As well as this we provide a wealth of support for new starters included training days which include topics such as safeguarding, end of life care, sepsis, phlebotomy, cannulation and catheterisation.

“The nursing teams are at the very heart of the work we do in Gateshead and we're proud and passionate about providing excellent care. We've recently invested in our buildings, our infrastructure and our nursing teams, making Gateshead one of the most exciting and innovative places to work in the North East.”

Vicky Jobson, the nurse responsible for the scheme said “Although starting your new career as a qualified nurse is a really exciting time, the transition from student nurse to registered nurse can be daunting.

“We are hoping that the new guardians will help to provide not only pastoral support but also share their wealth of knowledge and experience of nursing.”

All the newly qualified nurses were welcomed at a meet and greet event with cakes and food kindly donated by Sainsbury.
