Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Mrs Yvonne Ormston MBE as its new chief executive.

Yvonne joins the organisation from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), where she has been the chief executive for more than four years, and brings a wealth of experience from across the NHS.

Gateshead Health Chairman, Mrs Julia Hickey, said “I am delighted to welcome Yvonne back to the Trust – she was our executive director of strategy and compliance from 2005 to 2014 – and I know she brings a passion for patient care and staff wellbeing, which are integral to our Trust values.

"I believe Yvonne’s experience makes her ideally placed to lead the Trust and work with our partners across the region to deliver high quality care to local people."

Yvonne Ormston MBE said "I am absolutely delighted to be returning to the Trust as its Chief Executive and consider it a great privilege.

"I am keen to further support the staff in the great care that they provide and together with patients and other stakeholders explore how we can continue to further improve and develop services."

About Gateshead Health

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from a number of facilities including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

As a group we employ around 4,200 staff and currently provide 600 hospital beds across Gateshead. Our primary focus is on providing excellent general health services to our local community complemented by key specialist areas including Gynaecology, maternity, palliative care and old age psychiatry.

Alongside a full range of local hospital services, we provide breast screening services for Gateshead, South Tyneside, Sunderland and parts of Durham – and we are the North Eastern hub for the National Bowel Cancer and AAA Screening Programmes, covering a population of around seven million people.

We provide cutting edge care from some of our state-of-the-art facilities including a £32m Emergency Care Centre, a £12m Pathology centre of excellence and the beautifully-designed Peter Smith surgery centre.

Our maternity services are rated among the very best in the country and our work treating gynaecological cancers has built up a national and international reputation. We also run the Gateshead Fertility Centre, one of the top ten IVF clinics in the country which has created hundreds of new families in the North East over the last decade.

Since 1 October 2016 a new organisation called the Gateshead Care Partnership has been providing NHS community services across the borough by bringing together teams from the NHS, Community Based Care Ltd (whose membership comprises all Gateshead GPs) and Gateshead Council.

This innovative new partnership enables the whole system to work together more effectively so that all the experts from doctors and nurses to GPs and social workers are working together on better, more responsive care. By coming together in this way we bring everyone into a single organisation with patient care at its heart.
