Nurses focusing on quality care at QE hospital

An NHS scheme in Gateshead to improve the quality of patient care, as well as increase staff motivation, has been singled out for praise by the national healthcare regulator.

NHS Improvement, which oversees all NHS trusts in England, has published its Guide to developing and implementing ward and unit accreditation programmes. Gateshead Health NHS Trust’s ward accreditation programme is included as an example of “inspiring” best practice.

Ward accreditation schemes require staff to continuously measure, evaluate and improve day-to-day care for patients on the wards. These schemes promote safer patient care by motivating staff to share best practice, which also ensures that wards are a better place to work, train and learn.

Dr Hilary Lloyd, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality, says: “We’re honoured to have led on the production of this NHS Improvement best practice guide, as well as providing an example of how we do this in Gatehead. As a trust, we follow the approach of continuous improvement and we foster a supportive culture to empower our nurses and midwives to improve patient care.

“We know there are wonderful examples of the dedication and hard work of all our staff and this ward accreditation scheme gives us an opportunity to share their efforts and acknowledge the amazing effort they put in. It also helps us understand where departments may need help and better understand the challenges our staff face so we can do our best to support them.”

Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England, says: “We have learned so much from the pioneering colleagues who helped us developed this guidance and I’m so pleased to share their inspiring work. High-quality nursing care is central to delivering the highest standards in the NHS and nurses and midwives are uniquely positioned to understand the things that can improve services for patients.”
