Digital whiteboards help to save 5000 hours of qualified nursing time at Gateshead Health NHS Trust

Gateshead introduced digital whiteboards across their Trust in early 2017 as a way of improving patient safety and care as part of their digital transformation project. Since then they haven’t looked back.

The bespoke whiteboards provide a wide range of real-time patient information including a colour coded display that indicates if patients are vulnerable to falls, pressure skin damage and if they have specialist nutrition needs. The colour coding allows staff entering the ward to easily and quickly prioritise patient care. One of the benefits of the introduction of the digital whiteboards was an 88.5% reduction in time taken for ward staff to locate risk scores. This has saved the Trust approximately 5000 hours of qualified nursing time per annum.

Alongside the visual alerts, the whiteboards also display the patients estimated date of discharge.

Dr Rob Allcock, CCIO at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust said “The estimated date of discharge is visible to all care-givers enabling them to coordinate their work towards the common goal.  Real time, accurate, tracking ensures robust management of cross-infections, and enables us to provide wards with information on their individual patient flow patterns and identify opportunities to eliminate non-illness related delays in discharge”.

“Discharge of patients is also expedited in other ways. For example referral to physiotherapy is coordinated by simply updating the whiteboard status, removing paperwork and delays”.

Andrea Adams, Digital Transformation Programme Lead said “As the Trust is a GDE Fast Follower; this is just one of many digital projects taking place across the Trust. The digital whiteboards link together with a number of other projects to bring real digital transformation to support clinicians in providing the best possible patient care”.

Andrew Rooks, Digital Nurse at the Gateshead Trust said “one the benefits of introducing the digital whiteboards, is that they link directly with the Trust’s patient administrations system resulting in an intuitive use of digital technology by the clinicians”.
