Gateshead is Good with Outstanding care

The services we provide to the public have today been officially rated as good with outstanding care by the national healthcare regulator.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published a comprehensive report into the services provided by our NHS Trust and given us an overall rating of ‘Good’, with improvements noted in every area.

While Gateshead retained the current overall rating from the last inspection four years ago, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is now Outstanding, improving from its previous rating of Good.

As part of a detailed inspection our services in Gateshead were praised for keeping people safe; providing effective, evidence-based care; respecting and empowering patients; having minimal delays, waiting times or cancellations and creating a positive culture within the organisation.

Within the hospital our surgery, maternity and gynaecology services were also rated as outstanding overall.

Community services for adults were inspected for the first time since transferring into the trust two years ago and were rated Good overall. Community mental health services improved and were rated as Good.

Older people’s mental health services have also made significant improvements and already have a clear plan for addressing the final few issues raised by the CQC.

Chief Executive Yvonne Ormston MBE said: “This demonstrates a very strong performance by the Trust and shows local people that NHS services in Gateshead are something we can all be really proud of.

“This is fantastic news for the thousands of patients we treat every year and a real endorsement of the efforts made by our staff at the hospital and across the community to provide high quality care to all of our patients day in, day out.

“To achieve and then maintain this high standard of patient care is very difficult, especially at a time when the NHS is facing such high levels of demand for all of its services.”

“However, there is always room for improvement and while the findings show we have already progressed in every area of the inspection, there is still work to be done. We’ll be looking closely at the report and CQC recommendations so we can better understand how to improve even further.”

Hilary Lloyd, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality said:

“This is good news for Gateshead, fantastic for patients and a real achievement for all our staff who provide local people with the safe, effective care that they deserve. It was great to see consistent improvement in many areas since our previous inspection, especially as we had already set such high standards”

The CQC has now published all the ratings and a detailed report which you can find on their website here.
