We are delighted to announce that the Digital Healthcare Gateshead Team has been shortlisted for Digitising Patient Services Initiative at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The judging panel, made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, have shortlisted the Health Call Smoking Cessation Service despite the tough competition from hundreds of excellent applicants. The text based smoking cessation service has been selected based on its ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact it is having on patient experiences within the health sector.

Smoking rates in the North East are 52% higher compared to rates across England. This health inequality results in eleven people a day dying due to smoking related illnesses. Thus, the ambition of the project was to make a positive intervention to address health inequalities caused by Smoking within Gateshead, particularly with hard to reach groups. Prior to the project the Trust did not systematically offer smoking cessation support to any of its patients.

The aim of the project was to produce a fully automated text message support service that would be offered to patients of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, to support them in quitting smoking. Since launching in January, over 30,000 patients have been offered the service with over 1000 taking up the offer of support.

Andrea Adams, Digital Transformation Programme Lead said “I would like to congratulate all of the people who worked on this collaborative project it was a true team effort”

HSJ editor Alistair Mclellan, comments “We would like to congratulate Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust on being nominated in the category of Digitising Patient Services Initiative ahead of this year’s 2019 HSJ awards. The entrants this year have been of incredible calibre, and each of the finalists in this category have been chosen based on their outstanding commitment to excellence in healthcare.”
