Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

Posted on Fri, 22/01/2021 by Sharon Denise Clark – Lead Colposcopy Nurse Specialist and Dr Kathryn Clement – Colposcopist

This week is cervical screening awareness week and we are here to remind you all of the importance to attend for your cervical screening at your GP practice or sexual health centre.

Around 2,600 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in England each year, and around 690 women die from the disease, which equates to 2 deaths every day. It is estimated that if everyone attended screening regularly, 83% of cervical cancer cases could be prevented.

This last year has certainly been a challenge for us all but this does not stop the risk of changes occurring to your cervix. All cervical screening is still going ahead in the community and we are still seeing women who require a Colposcopy examination due to abnormal changes. It is very important you still attend for your review with us here in Colposcopy if your screening is abnormal.

At present with all of the pressures of COVID to our NHS services the reporting of cervical screening is delayed and some appointments in colposcopy may take a little longer at the moment.

Please be assured we are working very hard to get everyone seen as soon as feasible and if you have any concerns or anxieties please speak to your practice nurse or to the nurses within the colposcopy unit here at the Queen Elizabeth

Jos cervical trust also have great information on HPV, Cervical screening and Colposcopy for any women who would like this.

Cervical screening saves lives – Please pick up the phone and get in touch with your GP practice or Sexual health Clinic to book your appointment.

If you have any other concerning symptoms – such as bleeding after sex, irregular bleeding or abnormal discharge – Please make sure you book an appointment for a review of this - These symptoms are usually nothing of concern however it is important you speak to your GP or Nurse Practitioner.

Show your support by using our facebook frame to raise awareness! Please take care and we look forward to seeing some of you soon
