Nursing and midwifery

"High quality care can only be delivered by a nursing and midwifery workforce that attracts and retains high quality recruits, is educated to be competent and compassionate, and undergoes continuing professional development.” Department of Health 2010

QE Gateshead is committed to ensuring that we have a nursing and midwifery workforce with the skills, knowledge and competence to provide the best care for our patients, and the principles of lifelong learning are fundamental to the development of a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. A supportive culture, supported by strong and visible leadership at all levels is also essential.

We provide a range of both formal and work based education and development opportunities for each band of staff underpinned by the appraisal process and the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. These include

  • A structured preceptorship programme for newly registered nurses and midwives.
  • Leadership and management development programmes.
  • Clinical skills development.
  • Access to academic study from individual modules to degree and masters level.
  • “Caring for You” - a Nursing Assistant development programme and access vocational programmes.
