Why organ donation matters

Posted on Mon, 03/09/2018 by Dr Lynn Swanson, Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Organ Donation

There are currently approximately 6,000 people on the organ transplant waiting list. Last year in the UK, 400 people died waiting for an organ transplant.

My work involves ensuring that anyone who wishes to donate their organs has the opportunity to do so, should the situation arise. I work closely with other doctors, particularly on Critical Care, to ensure we fulfil that wish. We have a Specialist Nurse from NHS Blood and Transplant who visits the Trust regularly helping with teaching, raising awareness and facilitating organ and tissue donation.

We don’t really talk very much about death even though it is one of life’s certainties. Two-thirds of the UK’s population have not discussed their wishes about organ donation with their family. This can leave them making decisions ata difficult time. Families often regret not having consented to donation.

As well as talking to your loved ones you can join the Organ Donation Register. It’s really quick and easy to do online

I am on the register because I believe that my organs could transform someone else’s life after my death. That is something really special.
