Our Orthopaedics and Trauma department provide the following services:

Emergency Surgery

Our emergency surgery is mostly broken bones, and tends to come from A&E.  Ward 14 is our trauma ward which houses the Acute Hip Unit for patients with a fractured neck of femur (broken hip) and all other emergency Orthopaedic trauma patients. All our elective operations, both in-patient and day surgery are performed in our fantastic Peter Smith Surgery Centre.

Elective Surgery (Day and Inpatient)

Our elective surgeries, are generally planned in advance, and constitutes most things that aren’t an emergency as per above. All our elective operations, both in patient and day surgery are performed as in our fantastic Peter Smith Surgery Centre. This type of surgery usually involves operations on the bones, joints and soft tissues of hips, knees, shoulder and hands. Click here to find out more about the pre-assessment process.

Outpatient clinics

As well as our existing clinics held at the Queen Elizabeth hospital we also provide Orthopaedic outpatient services at three other facilities in order to offer choice and convenience of our patients.  These clinics are held at QE Blaydon, and in Washington Primary Care Centre.  We also work very closely with Physiotherapy, Orthotics and the Plaster Room whose services are integral in the delivery of Orthopaedic treatment.
