Parkinson's consultants

Dr Richard Athey - Consultant Physician & Geriatrician
MBBS University of Newcastle 1997
FRCP (Edinburgh) 2010

I qualified in medicine at the University of Newcastle and have remained in the north east of England ever since. I developed a strong interest in Parkinson’s disease during my training and have maintained this as a consultant. I look after patients with Parkinson’s disease both in outpatient clinics and on the hospital wards and work closely with the Parkinson’s disease specialist nurses in the trust. I enjoy the challenge that Parkinson’s disease brings, helping patients with a wide variety of symptoms and getting to know them well, often over many years. I participate in Parkinson’s disease research in conjunction with the PD team in Newcastle and am currently recruiting patients into the Proband ‘Tracking Parkinson’s’ study.

As part of my work I also look after acute elderly patients on the medical wards, orthopaedic patients during their post-operative rehabilitation, palliative patients on the St. Bede’s palliative care unit and participate in the acute medical rota receiving admissions on the Medical Assessment Unit.
