Training

I attended Glasgow University Medical School and undertook specialist training in Orthopaedic surgery in Liverpool and Aberdeeen/Inverness with a fellowship at the Robert Jones/Agnus Hunt hospital in Oswestry.

Other responsibilities

I have a strong commitment to teaching, training and education.  I am a member of the regional STC panel, fully accredited trainer of orthopaedic trainees; I regularly attend the ARCP process for trainees and regularly interview for the national appointments process. In addition I am fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators and have a Master’s degree in medical education from Newcastle University.

I am also a visiting Professor at Northumbria University where my role involves interfacing between the academic roles Northumbria University provides and my own clinical oriented background that provides a practical focus for research.

I am Editor in Chief of Wikipaedics, a BOA sponsored e-learning platform designed for Trainees preparing for their FRCS examination. The Wikipaedics format is a result of extensive discussions during trainee focus groups that outlined the need for non-didactic learning that would help trainees to acquire higher-order judgement skills.

I run a 6 day RCSEng fully accredited FRCS (Tr&Orth) revision course each year in Northumbria University and QEH. This attracts a significant number of international candidates from the Far East and Middle East.  I have been an ATLS Instructor for over 8 years.  I am regularly invited to present at both national and international orthopaedic meetings.

Each year at the BOA annual conference I teach clinical examination skills to orthopaedic registrars as part of a BOA Instructional faculty.  I am committee member for the BOA educational and revalidation committee(Ed Com).

I am also RCSEng AAC panel member which involves him attending consultant interviews as representative of the RCSEng.  This is part of a quality assurance process for NHS consultant appointments to make sure the best candidate is appointed to post.
