Covid measures remain in place to protect patients and staff

As Plan B restrictions are eased in England, NHS staff in Gateshead are reminding the public that infection control measures are still in place across healthcare settings to help protect both patients and staff.

All current infection, prevention and control measures will remain in place, including:

  • Mandatory mask wearing on NHS premises

  • Encouraging of social distancing at all times

  • Frequent hand washing and sanitisation

Andy Beeby, medical director for Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Although Plan B restrictions are being lifted, all infection control and prevention measures will remain in place for the foreseeable future in all of our Trust buildings, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon Urgent Treatment Centre, and Bensham Hospital, as well as our community services.

“We’re asking people to continue wear a face mask, socially distance and wash their hands regularly.

“Visiting restrictions will also remain in place to reduce footfall in the hospital and protect our patients and staff.

“Like other NHS Trusts, Gateshead is still under extreme pressure so thank you to the public for their continuing support and help during this challenging time. Our teams have worked tirelessly for the last two years to minimise the spread of Covid-19 and it’s really important that we stick to our measures for now and protect our patients and staff.

"Please be kind to our staff if they ask you to comply – they’re all doing their very best to make sure that you receive the care you need quickly and safely.

Please do not attend for an outpatient appointment if you have symptoms of Covid or are in the isolation period after an infection or because you are a household contact. You can rearrange your appointment by contacting our booking service on 0191 445 2718.

“I would also urge everyone eligible to have the COVID-19 vaccine to take up the offer as this is still our very best defence against serious illness.”
