Preparing for your stay

During your stay with us, you should make note of the following advice so your visit runs smoothly.

  • Please make sure you arrive at the ward on your letter on time, any delay in arrival could result in a delayed or even cancelled operation.
  • Please remove any jewellery/piercings before your operation, the main reasons we ask you to remove these are that any metal can interfere with the surgeon’s equipment, and can also harbour bacteria which may cause infection post surgery. Parts of your body may swell during surgery and we don’t want your jewellery to get stuck.
  • Please remove any nail varnish from both fingers and toes as during surgery we may use the colour of your nail beds to make sure you’re getting enough oxygen.
  • Please don’t bring any items of value with you into hospital. There may not be anywhere to lock up your belongings, and the QE Gateshead is unable to take liability for any lost or stolen items.

You should also make sure that you have someone who you can take you home after your operation.
