Ward 2 team thank you

Staff in the research team at Gateshead NHS are today celebrating the contribution of patients and staff in the fight against covid – and have thanked everyone for their valuable contributions.

Despite the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research and development team at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust  has continued to deliver ongoing research and development activity and has contributed to many important studies, looking at areas such as treatments for Covid-19, as well as the long-term effects on patients who have recovered from covid.

Today, on International Clinical Trials Day (20th May), the team have thanked all of the NHS staff who have helped recruit patients to their studies – as well as the patients themselves, without whom research would not be possible.

Andy Beeby, medical director at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The Covid trials have been hugely successful and have very quickly changed our approach to treating Covid with measurable improvements in outcomes for patients. A huge thank you to everyone who has played a part and contributed to these advances."

Dr Sophie Rutt, consultant in acute medicine, adds: "Research in medicine allows us to provide the best and most effective treatments to our patients through better understanding the human body and its diseases. The single biggest thing we can do to embed research into practice is to let patients know that being involved in research is their right as an NHS patient, it’s something they should offered. I would like my patients to ask me “is there a trial I can be involved in?"
