About the service
The Macmillan cancer support centre is in the Swan Centre in the purple zone of the QE hospital.
The centre provides access to information about cancer, including screening, advice for families, practical advice and bereavement support. It is managed by a Macmillan cancer information and support officer and supported by trained volunteers.
There is a large library of materials in different formats and languages. These are free of charge and guided internet access is also available to patients, their families and carers.
You do not need to have cancer to use the facilities in the centre. Suggestions, recommendations and requests for new literature are welcomed.
Visit the Macmillan Cancer Support website for further help, advice and support.
There is a drop-in facility available between 10:00 and 16:00 and no appointment is necessary.
The centre is staffed by volunteers and the main advantage of this is that our volunteers do not have the same time constraints that professionals have. Many of the volunteers have personal experience of cancer and therefore understand how patients feel.
Patients can be referred on to other agencies from the centre, such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and social services, and Macmillan grant applications can be made from here.
Referrals for complementary therapy and counselling are also offered.
