At Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, we are dedicated to our involvement in Clinical Research in order to gather evidence on what works best in maternity services. This ensures we can deliver the best possible care for pregnant patients and their families, bothnow and in the future.
Through research we can:
- Find out which treatments and care pathways are most effective for patients during pregnancy
- Develop the advice and information we offer to patients
- Assess what is acceptable to women in our care and where and when specialist support is needed
Research is essential for developing evidence based care, and provides the foundation for our guidelines and protocols to ensure patients receive the appropriate care and information throughout their pregnancy.
Maternity services research is not just about the here and now, but about safeguarding a better future for all. Research is dependent on volunteers for its success, which means the support of our patients and their partners is essential.
At any stage during or after your pregnancy, you may be offered the opportunity to take part in a research study. Each study is different, so if we offer you the opportunity to take part, you will be given written information and plenty of time to ask questions before you make a decision. Occasionally research trials can offer additional care pathway options for participants, that are not presently available as part of standard care.
The maternity research team frequently receive positive feedback from patients that have been a part of research trials, and patients typically report that they have had a positive experience whilst taking part.
