Stoptober - Trust pledges to be a smoke-free site

Posted on Fri, 15/10/2021

October means Stoptober, and as the Trust continues work towards its pledge of becoming a smoke-free site, we’re using the month-long event to encourage staff to make use of tthe support available to them and stop smoking.

Trust colleague Dr Ruth Sharrock, who recently joined the All Party Parliamentary Group to discuss measures to stop smoking, explains: “I wanted to seize the opportunity of ‘Stoptober’ to really encourage anyone of you who smoke, to make a quit attempt.

“As most of you know, my day job is predominantly lung cancer work and I have sadly seen too many colleagues sat on the wrong side of my clinic desk in my short time as a consultant. Sadly it is likely that another 320 of our colleagues will die from smoking related diseases, which is unimaginable, especially when it is something that we can really do something about.

“Myself, the Occupational lead, Helen Adams, and our fabulous outpatient pharmacy team are all happy to help talk through a quit attempt and the options available. Please, please – don’t wait, keep trying, talk to any of us. We are all here to help in any way we can.”

Smokers who quit for 28 days are five times more likely to stop smoking altogether, and our support offering is designed to help you through a 12 week period, offering you access to two of as many nicotine replacement therapy products as you need throughout the 12 weeks (for example, nicotine patches, gum etc).

A three-month prepaid certificate costs around £30, while those who don’t pay for prescriptions can access the service completely free. To learn more about or access this support, please call (0191 445) 6453.

The Trust also recently became part of the Vapeline trial, and any staff who are also patients in Gateshead might be eligible to receive further support as part of this research project. To learn more about this offering, please contact ghnt.vapeline@nhs.net.
