Radio Tyneside, the first corporate partnership

We are pleased to announce Radio Tyneside as Gateshead Health Charity’s first corporate partner. As a corporate partner, Radio Tyneside will support the charity through promotion of the charity’s work, contributing to events and spreading the reach of the charity throughout the Gateshead community and beyond.

This partnership will be mutually beneficial to both parties. As Gateshead Health Charity continues to host events to raise funds to enhance the patient experience, Radio Tyneside will be able to entertain listeners by broadcasting the charity’s activities, achievements and goals. Being a charity itself, Radio Tyneside is passionate about supporting Gateshead Health Charity through continuing to broadcast events, donate prizes and raise the profile of the charity.

Richard Finch, Station Director at Radio Tyneside, said, “Radio Tyneside has provided a hospital radio service to hospitals in Gateshead for many years. We have worked with Gateshead Health Charity on a number of initiatives such as ‘Open Days’ and the golf tournament and are grateful for the continued support. We are delighted to be recognised as a ‘corporate partner’ of the Charity and look forward to developing our relationship going forward”.

Radio Tyneside was started in the early 1950s as a football commentary service by six Newcastle United fans. The first match covered was Newcastle United v Wolverhampton Wanderers and broadcast to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI). Today commentaries are still broadcast to the RVI, Freeman and the Queen Elizabeth hospital.

In 1973 Radio Tyneside started recruiting volunteers that gave the station the opportunity to increase its broadcasting hours. Since then, the station has gone from strength to strength, increasing the number of volunteers and the hours of broadcasting. In 2018, they successfully applied to OFCOM for a Community Radio licence, meaning they could broadcast on FM across Newcastle and Gateshead promoting health and wellbeing. Radio Tyneside continues to broadcast to the patients on the wards, broadcasting a cross section of programmes as well as promoting health and wellbeing.

Clare Drummond, Manager of Gateshead Health Charity, said: “We are so grateful to have Radio Tyneside as our first corporate partner. We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Radio Tyneside and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for our relationship, very exciting times”.
