QE Gateshead has appointed two new non-executive directors, after the tenure for two long serving non execs came to an end.

Gateshead Council leader, Cllr Mick Henry has been appointed alongside Shaun Bowron, a former Group Operations Director for GMG radio.

Councillor Mick Henry

Born in Gateshead, Mick was first elected as a councillor for the inner city ward of Saltwell in 1986 and has been Leader of Gateshead Council since 2002. In 2007, he was awarded a CBE for his services to local government.

Before becoming a councillor, Mick was a Senior Lecturer in Photography and Head of Digital Imaging at Northumbria University and he previously held posts in most sectors of education, including class teacher in a special school. He also worked in industry and the NHS, in the field of efficiency improvement/management services.

Mick’s interests include photography, camping, cycling, skiing and yoga.

Shaun Bowron

Mr Bowron has over 30 years of experience in the media industry, across both newspaper and commercial radio sectors. Prior to taking early retirement in 2011 he worked at Board level as Group Operations Director for GMG Radio, a post he had held for over 9 years. This involved the day to day operations management of 13 separate stations. While in post Mr Bowron was asked to lead the project team which launched Smooth Radio in the north east of England in 2008. Thereafter he led the project team to restructure a number of Smooth Regional Radio stations into one national brand.

The interview panel felt that Mr Bowron’s knowledge and expertise would allow him to offer appropriate support and advice in a number of areas, in particular around communications and change management, and that he will bring a new perspective to the Board.
