What is an Emergency Care Centre?

What is an Emergency Care Centre?

Our new Emergency Care Centre is not just a bright, modern new building – It also represents and brand new way of working with patients.

The centre modernises the way patients are cared for during an emergency by bringing together a wide range of services including:

  • accident and emergency
  • walk in centre
  • GP services
  • medical & surgical assessment
  • urgent children’s services

Find out how the ECC is improving care for patients and the working environment for staff from our lead consultant in emergency medicine Neil Halford:

Ian Renwick, chief executive of QE Gateshead says: “This is a really exciting time for the QE because our plans for the future are starting to become a reality. This exciting new £32m Emergency Care Centre provides an amazing new building for people in Gateshead.

“It's a unique hospital building and the environment for patients and visitors is something really special. This innovative new facility not only provides a state-of-the-art unit right here in Gateshead, but also revolutionises the patient experience during medical emergencies.  Our patients now have greater dignity because they don't need to be moved long distances across the hospital for treatment and can also experience improved surroundings with single bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms.”

Julia Hickey, chairman of QE Gateshead said:

“The new £32m centre is unique in terms of the architecture and facilities, but also in bringing together all the services required to treat patients during an emergency into a single building. This means that trauma patients do not need to be moved around a large hospital site for the various tests by different departments, they can all be carried out in a single, dedicated unit.

“This state-of-the-art facility has also been designed in a completely different way to most existing hospitals. The layout has been chosen because it specifically reflects what people say they want from a modern NHS hospital, which includes single occupancy rooms with en suite bathrooms for all patients in our short stay wards."
