QE working with young mums

QE Gateshead has developed a new set of standards around caring for pregnant young women after working closely with a group of expectant young mums.

The new care standards set out what younger people can expect from healthcare staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and outline some of things that the young people highlighted as there biggest priorities.

The standards were developed as part of the QE’s work with the Gateshead Young Women’s Project which wanted to explore some of the challenges facing young women during pregnancy.

The hospital is about to embark on a similar project looking at how it can better help 16 – 18 year olds who are admitted to adult wards at the hospital.

Kate Jones, Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children at QE Gateshead said:

“This was a really interesting project with young women in the community who were able to have more of a say in how we work with younger people during pregnancy. These new care standards will be useful for both our healthcare staff and the pregnant young women they work with.

“Many of the themes and concerns that the young people raised were the same things that we hear from all expectant mums so it was good to be able to reassure them of the high standards that are already in place at the QE. We’re very proud of the way we work with mums during pregnancy and these standards will really reinforce that commitment.”

Mums to be who come to the QE to have their babies are already assured that they are receiving the highest quality of care possible, following a national assessment last year. Gateshead was one of only 15 maternity units in the country (including two others in the North East) to be given the highest possible rating for maternity risk management standards by the NHS litigation unit.
