Women's Royal Voluntary Service (WRVS)

The WRVS has been working in Gateshead for more than 25 years.

The WRVS Tyne and Wear branch's goal is to improve the lives of older people in the region by providing services and fundraising to other organisations like ourselves.

The WRVS run a coffee shop in our Outpatients department, and any profits go back into the hospital as donations. The voluntary group do some great work and raise on average of £30,000 per year which is donated to services or used to buy equipment to benefit older people in the hospital.

Some of the things that they have bought for the hospital in recent years include:

  • Four beds in the plaster room
  • A hoist for helping to move older patients
  • Pressure mats to avoid older people getting bed sores
  • Medical equipment for the surgery centre.

Although the WRVS' history lies with women, anyone can volunteer with the WRVS. You can click here to visit the WRVS website and find out more about the work they do.
